James "Jim" Davis Obituary
November 13, 1940 - January 22, 2013
Resided in Portland, OR
Jim met his wife Susan while walking down the street of 10th and Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee in 1962. She moved to Portland, Oregon with her parents and he jumped on a plane (he HATED flying) and followed her across country. They married in a snowstorm on December 19, 1963 in Portland.
In 1973 he started Davis & Son Lawnmowers, selling and servicing lawnmowers with his son, Quentin. After seeing people running by the lawnmower shop on 6th Avenue in Portland, he decided to open a running store. In 1979, Jim opened 'Running Outfitters', the independent running shoe and supply store - he referred to it as "Un-Nike Town." He published the popular "Portland Remembered" calendar for 26 years. From 1989 – 1993 he served as Director of the Multnomah Education Service District.
As a local business owner, Jim was very involved in his neighborhood. Most recently he served as Land Use Chairperson of the South Portland Neighborhood Association and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 2012. As part of his service to the Corbett/Terwilliger/Lair Hill neighborhood association he was recognized as 2006 Volunteer of the Year.
A graduate of Portland State University, he also attended Marquette University. He also worked at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee - where he worked in the media center teaching stage management. A highlight was the time he interviewed Muhommad Ali and Aaron Copeland.
His interests included writing, reading, politics and history. He enjoyed spending time with his eleven-year-old granddaughter Victoria. He liked visiting with her and hearing about her interests. He loved to include her in his calendar, as topic of his editor's message, and in recent years naming her as "Intern" in hopes that the family would carry on with the "Portland Remembered" calendar.
Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan Davis; son Quentin and daughter-in-law Teri, and granddaughter Victoria. Also survived by sister, Colleen Davis, cousins and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Constance.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013, at the Presbyterian Church of Laurelhurst, 935 NE 33rd Ave., Portland. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in his name to the Oregon Humane Society or Loaves and Fishes.
